Besan & turmeric remedy for cold
Besan Seera

When we were little kids, anytime we fell sick with flu, cold or had an injury, my parents would make us drink warm milk with turmeric to help us recover quickly. Home remedies such as these are still the first port of call whenever I fall sick.

However, I won’t bore you with all the health benefits of turmeric as you can read all about them on National Institute of Health website.

Turmeric has always been used turmeric extensively in Indian food and in Ayurveda, Indian system of medicine.  Most households will cook both lunch and dinner dishes with turmeric. Even our pickles have turmeric in them! Turmeric is what Indian food that distinctive yellow colour.

But not all turmeric are equal, so be careful when buying turmeric powder. Cheaper turmeric sold in supermarkets might have chemicals mixed in them.

I am lucky that my family has always grown turmeric. My aunth washes and boils the turmeric roots which are then dried in sunshine and ground into a beautiful orange gold powder. We have never used store bought turmeric as the quality of turmeric made in our farm just does not compare.   This is the only thing that I bring back whenever I go back home (and the gajrela -carrot mithai, that my mom makes).

While milk with turmeric is quick and easy, my favourite recipe for when I am sick is besan seera. A dish made from besan (brown chickpea flour), milk, turmeric and black peppers. My mom would make it after dinner and serve it piping hot. It helps soothes sore throat and opens up a blocked nose.

I promise that it’s one of the tastiest remedies  you can have for cold, blocked nose & sore throat! And I promise that it’s really easy to make!
